Ghrelin is a hormone produced in the gastrointestinal tract and is responsible for increasing food intake. It increases before feeding when hungry increasing gastric mobility and gastric acid secretion. Ghrelin is formed by cleavage of preproghrelin but only becomes active then the Ser3 is post-translationally acylated with octanoic acid. Since ghrelin increases food uptake and  body weight it is an important tool in obesity research.
