PTH Related protein (1-40) is an amino-terminal fragment which induces dose-dependent calcium resorption in rat bone organ culture and calcium uptake in enterocytes. Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is expressed in some human cancers (breast and certain lung cancers) but has normal functions in mammary gland development, tooth eruption, and fetal bone development. Tumor secretion of PThrP can lead to hypercalcemia which can be an initial indication of malignancy.
