Z-Ala-Arg-Arg-4MbNA is a fluorogenic substrate for Cathepsin B. Cathepsin B is a lysosomal cysteine protease with a role in intracellular protein degradation. Cathepsin B crosses the blood-brain barrier and elevated levels are implicated in many neurological maladies including traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Activity is quantified by release of free fluorescent 4-Methoxy-β-naphthylamine (4MβNA) which excites at 335-350 nm and emits at 410-440 nm
