Plasmepsin II is an aspartic acid protease produced by plasmodium parasites and related to human β-secretases. Plasmepsin II activity can be detected by the synthetic substrate ALERTFF(NO2)SFPT-OH through cleavage of the Phe-Phe(NO2) bond. The substrate cleavage re-action is monitored by the decrease in the average absorbance from 284 –324 nm.
