Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) is a cardiovascular hormone which is synthesized in cardiac muscular cells. It is released in response to stretching of atrial walls, Endothelin, and stimulation of β-adrenoreceptors. ANP increases renal sodium excretion resulting in decreased expanded extracellular fluid volume (ECF). ANP is degraded by neutral endopeptidase (NEP). This is the major circulating form of ANP in rats.
