Clearance of apoptotic cells via phagocytosis is the final stage of apoptosis. Efficient clearance of apoptotic cells is a critical component of maintaining homeostasis, especially in tissues with high rates of cellular turnover. While there has been much progress made in understanding the underlying mechanisms of this process, new tools are needed to advance further insights. Here, we outline the development and use of lipid microparticles that mimic cellular ‘eat me’ signals for use in the study of phagocytosis.
