Description:
—The position and number of phosphate groups in the inositol phosphates are integral to their signaling specificity. However, since the molecules are highly charged at physiological pH, introducing exogenous InsPns into cells to artificially stimulate signaling pathways is very difficult. The problem has been solved with the introduction of Membrane Permeant Inositol Phosphates in which the hydrophobicity of the molecules has been increased via masking the hydroxyl and phosphate groups as esters. The resulting fully protected derivatives are able to readily penetrate plasma membranes and generate the original molecules inside cells within minutes after administering the compounds through cleavage by esterases.
